There are a universe of "things" out there that can be used on boats without ever having to go to the "marine store" and pay huge prices for something which something else can do just as well for pennies on the dollar.
An example is the strum box.
Every bilge pickup or sump pickup needs a strum box to prevent debris from getting in and clogging the pick-up for the pump. Here's a simple way of making one.
All the piping on TOAD is copper. I like copper and it doesn't suffer from getting squeezed by an errant piece of gear when the going gets rough, and it doesn't suffer from collapsed tubing when it gets old, It's almost indesctructable on board a boat. It is unlikely that you have all copper piping on board your boat, but you can always join a short piece of copper tubing to whatever pickup tubing you now have.
Take that piece of copper tubing in hand. Go to the supermarket. (You don't really have to have the copper tubing in hand, but you do have to go to the supermarket). Go to the dishwashing department and find some copper scouring pads.
Go home.
Now you have to attach it to the copper pipe.
You can't solder this very well. The copper scouring pad is fine enough that the copper strandsjust burn under the heat of the torch. You might be able to solder it well enough with a soldering GUN and solder but I have not tried that.
What I do is mix up a batch of thickened epoxy and apply it to the pipe. Shove the pipe into the scouring pad and wrap it with a little Scotch tape. (The tape won't stick and you can peel it off when the epoxy has cured.
You now have a nice little strum box which is easily replaced, cheap to acquire and good at filtering out debris which is what you wanted in the first place.
Hose clamp it to whatever pickup tubing you have on your boat.
