David Flint, Babylon Blue : An Illustrated History of Adult Cinema 1960-1998

A detailed survey of American adult cinema that covers the major films of the last four decades with entries on all the better-known stars and directors. For even earlier films, see: Eddie Muller and Daniel Faris, Grindhouse: The Forbidden World of 'Adults Only' Cinema which traces adult film from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Jack Hunter, Eros in Hell : Sex, Blood & Madness in Japanese Cinema

This illustrated guide to Japanese exploitation cinema is sure to please with over 200 photographs and individual chapters on such subjects as Sadmonia: the Joys of Torture.

Helen McCarthy and Jonathan Clements, The Erotic Anime Movie Guide

In eleven chapters covers virtually every aspect of the genre and includes an A-Z filmography of anime, a glossary of Japanese terms, a pretty good bibliography, and background on many of the popular series. McCarthy also wrote The Anime! Movie Guide which covers non-erotic anime. For Manga (Japanese comic books) see: Frederik L. Schodt and Osamu Tezuka, Manga! Manga! : The World of Japanese Comics which traces the evolution of Japanese comics from 12th century scrolls to the present.

Robert H. Rimmer and Patrick Riley, The X-Rated Videotape Guides (7 volumes)

With a new volume published every few years, Riley seems determined to keep Rimmer's (the author of the Harrad Experiment) definitive listing of adult films up to date. The first two volumes cover the years up to 1990 and are the most useful for people trying to find older films that had scenes of both bdsm and intercourse, like the Story of Joanna. Volume 2 contains the index to both volumes. Volume 3 covers the years 1990-1992; Volume 4 the next few years, and so on. Rimmer abhorred violence in adult movies and kindly identified those that did, making them easy to spot in the guide. Older editions of the original edition sometimes show up in used bookstores. Be careful, though, because its later editions were printed without the section listing bdsm movies (the publisher objected to it). Riley has also compiled a listing of adult movies stars, the X-rated Videotape Star Index which is now up to three volumes. A better guide if you're just looking for a few good films is: Cathy Winks, The Good Vibrations Guide to Adult Videos which reviews about 100 of the better film.

Thomas Weisser and Yuko Mihara Weisser, Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia: The Sex Films

Linda Williams, Hard Core : Power, Pleasure, and the 'Frenzy of the Visible

The classic, academic survey of adult films. It is quite readable and makes some interesting points about bdsm films.
