Christina Abernathy (aka Drew Campbell), Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual
(Greenery Press, 1996), paperback, 96 pages, $11.95

This is an excellent, elegantly written, and well-thought out book. Abernathy covers everything from forms of address, postures, and discipline to day-to-day life as a consensual slave. Throughout she emphasizes practical, real world situations rather than the high fantasy of many manuals. She presents slavehood (her preferred term) as a real vocation to be pursued with the same vigor and attention to detail as any other. She supplies many other definitions we've needed as well. Probably her most important is that the paramount objective of a consensual slave should be "the ordering of one's life according to principles of service." I cannot praise this book too highly. It is must reading for anyone interested in a 24-7 master-slave relationship.

Christina Abernathy, Training with Miss Abernathy: A Workbook for Erotic Slaves and Their Owners  (Greenery Press, 1998), paperback, 160 pages, $11.95.

This comprehensive course of study for consensual slaves and their owners is a worthy companion to her original book. Abernathy again takes the vocation of slavehood very seriously. She divides slaves into a distinct categories such as maids and sex slaves, explains their requisite duties, and explores what kind of person is best suited for each type. She offers advice on a host of subjects from live-in slaves and those that don't, the significance of permanent marks, slaves with multiple owners, and many other important topics. It opens with a questionnaire to help prospective slaves determine their needs and goals. The core of the book focuses on training. Each chapter of the book a dresses a separate topic and includes activities and exercises to help slaves hone their skills. There are tantra exercises for sex slaves, meditation exercises to help slaves focus on the task at hand, and even closet organization and outfit selection exercises to help get their owners properly attired. Like any good workbook it has suggestions for outside reading assignments. If her first book didn't, this one definitely establishes Abernathy as an expert on this subject.

The Female Disciplinary Manual: A Complete Encyclopedia to the Correction of the Fair Sex
(Wildfire, 1997), hardcover 112 pages.

If you like a Victorian flair to your discipline, this reproduction of a British "flagellation manual" is certainly worth looking at, as is A Guide to the Correction of Young Gentlemen. Both of these books were originally published early in this century, and they are still worth reading today. Unfortunately, both are a bit pricy.

Jeb, So You Want to be a Slave?
(Selective Publishing, 1997), paperback, 48 pages, $13.95.

Now sadly defunct, Metropolitan Slave remains the only magazine to ever focus entirely on full-time bdsm relationships. This slim book originally appeared as a special issue of that magazine. Jeb has kept in print along with two collections of stories from the magazine and still has back issues for some issues. Jeb is unashamedly Old Guard and expects a lot from his slaves--more than most these days are willing to give. His attitudes have gotten him in trouble on many occasions, but his firmness and refusal to accede any ground to the politically correct, "I'll save you from own desires" forces in the community have won him something of a cult following. This book is focused toward novice slaves (primarily men) and those who are just starting to consider becoming someone's consensual slave. Jeb offers a  step-by-step program to help them on the way and prepare them for their future owners. Along with advice on everything from chastity to punishment, it includes three rather detailed slave contracts.

V. M. Johnson, To Love, to Obey, to Serve: Diary of an Old Guard Slave
(Mystic Rose Books, 1999), paperback, 337 pages, $17.95

An important autobiographical account by one of the movers and shakers who recounts her experiences as a 24/7 slave during the 1980s. It accurately demonstrates just how mundane and ordinary most of full time slave's life actually is.

Previously hard to find, this manual of female-dominant, male-submissive bdsm is now published by Greenery Press and should be available soon. F.R.R. Mallory (Aka Mistress Steel), Extreme Space
(Unbound Books, 1998), spiral bound, 284 pages, $21.95

Typical for a self-published work, this book has a lot of problems. The writing and editing are both poor and the author's propensity to place numerous words in ALL CAPs makes matters worse. Much of the book is simply the author's disconnected ramblings, liberally laced with incorrect information, such as that Old Guard slaves wore blue, leather slave collars. In fact, the author doesn't seem to know anything about the Old Guard, though she incorrectly credits all sorts of ideas and practices to the Old Guard. There is in an exceptionally long discourse on the genetic and evolutionary origins of sexual dominance which is, at best, absurd. Mixed in with this, though, are some remarkably useful insights on long-term slavery including deportment, setting boundaries, the use of cages, and more. Hopefully a 2nd edition will clean up this book's many faults, and expand on its strengths.

Mallory has also tried her hand at bdsm fiction, writing several novels including: "18," and Rhapsody: To Touch the Face of the Goddess.

Karen Salmansohn, How To Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days Or Less Using The Secrets Of Professional Dog Trainers
(Workman, 1994), Hardcover, 96 pages, $8.95.

While not written with bdsm in mind, this hilarious book by the author of "How To Succeed In Business Without A Penis," has been recommended by a number of professional dominatrices. The author, a former advertising executive, recommends a system of training based on the proven methods of dog trainers. Consistency and constant reinforcement are the keys to her tongue-in-cheek training program, and the book has numerous interesting ideas.
