SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOR READY FOR RADAR MISSION

Shuttle managers confirmed today that the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour
remains on schedule for Jan. 31 at 12:47 p.m. After a final review of data
gathered on a defective main engine fuel pump seal from orbiter Discovery,
engineers determined that Endeavour's main engine fuel pumps are safe for
flight. The analysis indicates that the possibility of having a defective
seal onboard Endeavour is very unlikely. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission
(SRTM) is an international project spearheaded by the National Imagery and
Mapping Agency and NASA, with participation of the German Aerospace Center
DLR. Its objective is to obtain the most complete high-resolution digital
topographic database of the Earth. SRTM consists of a specially modified
radar system that will fly onboard the space shuttle during its 11-day mission.
This radar system will gather data that will produce unrivaled 3-D images of
the Earth's surface. Thick clouds, however, were a concern as this newsletter
was written, and could force a delay.

FIRST ARIANE LAUNCH OF THE YEAR SUCCESSFUL

Arianespace's streak continues with the successful launch of an Ariane 42L
rocket with its payload of the Galaxy 10R communications satellite. The
satellite is a replacement for the original Galaxy 10, which crashed almost
2 years ago on board the maiden voyage of the Boeing 3 rocket.

SATELLITES TRACK WINTER STORMS

The extent of intense winter storm that stuck much of the eastern United
States earlier this week can be seen using NASA's Sea Viewing Wide
Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) onboard the SeaStar satellite. Satellites
have proved invaluable in tracking and predicting the storms. (Perhaps
predicting is too strong a word given the recent missed forecasts for
Washington DC).

NEAR AIMING FOR SHADOWLESS APPROACH TO EROS

NEAR has just completed an intensive week of preparations for Eros encounter
day February 14th (which is, of course, Valentine's Day). Several ATI
instructors are working on or helped design the NEAR spacecraft.

LOCKHEED MARTIN REORGANIZATION PLANS

According to the Wall Street Journal, Lockheed Martin plans to cut at
least 2000 jobs and consolidate management in its space and military aircraft
lines. Business administrative functions for all space-related lines will be
consolidated in a site near Denver eliminating jobs at Sunnyvale and Bethesda.
The company also issued a memo to employees in Sunnyvale, 12 buildings will
be emptied in preparation for a real-estate sale to be completed by the end
of 2001.
